A previously unused area on the main grounds of the TU Munich, located in the basement and surrounding a deep yard covered by a listed glass dome, was to be developed as the central workshop area for teaching and research at the Faculty of Architecture on a limited budget.
By removing walls, opening light wells and installing mobile glass sliding doors a light-flooded area was created. It can be divided into separate zones if required, is easily ventilated and manageable due to the new transparency. By reorganising the rooms, adding light wells and transparency, it was possible to meet the complex requirements of safety, escape route security in case of emergency, and the prevention of abuse, with a representative and attractive atrium for all university chairs. A continuous, insulated industrial parquet, which covers the whole workshop area and the renovated glass and steel supporting structure of the glass dome, including a historic crane track, determine the appearance and add to the generosity and attractiveness of the technical centre.
