OFFICE EXCURSION TO BRNO
The 3-day excursion to Moravia took us to incunabula of modern architecture, the history of urban development in the city of Brno with many historic buildings and exemplary contemporary buildings by our Czech colleagues. The highlight of the trip was the visit to Villa Tugendhat (1928 - 1930) by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich, expertly guided by Jan Sapák, a recognized expert and author of the book on Villa Tugendhat. The professional view of the bigger picture was rounded off with fine Moravian dishes and drinks.
We are now looking forward to incorporating the many impressions and suggestions into our ongoing projects.

HEARING IN THE STATE PARLIAMENT ON BUILDING TYPE E - AN INITIATIVE OF THE BAVARIAN CHAMBER OF ARCHITECTS
Today, planners of all disciplines have to build with a view to the essentials, adequately, sustainably and quality-oriented. This requires freedom that also enables the qualified professional groups to feed their technical expertise into the process through innovative thinking. The Bavarian Chamber of Architects proposes the introduction of a "building type E".
With a "building type E" the Bavarian Chamber of Architects advertises an additional offer within the Bavarian Building Code. This is primarily aimed at a competent builder. Expert builders and planners, should thus be given the freedom to reduce their project to the actual core of the protection goals of the Bavarian building code (stability, fire protection, healthy living conditions and environmental protection). This step is to be supported by a civil law opening clause be flanked at federal level, which enables expert contracting parties to agree on a "building type E" as a special property in the contract in a legally secure manner, deviating from the applicable recognized rules of technology.
Right at the beginning, Chamber President Prof. Lydia Haack presented the Chamber's motivation for introducing a "building type E": "The climate change must now be advanced as quickly as possible. Neither the readjustment of standards nor numerous building reduction commissions have so far achieved tangible results. We are convinced that the Bavarian Building Code is a valuable instrument for the success of the climate change, but currently still offers too little leeway for innovative approaches. The hearing itself is available on the state parliament's YouTube channel.

MERRY CHRISTMAS
An eventful year lies behind us, with changes and challenges that nobody expected in this way. The good thing is that together we not only managed to cope with the circumstances, but also to shape a lot in a positive way and to bring it forward, despite the restrictions for the mutual cooperation, which we have become all the more aware of as a special value. With this in mind, we would like to thank you for the good cooperation, your support and your trust.
We wish you and your loved ones a peaceful holiday and good health, confidence and success for the New Year.
Our office closes from December 22nd, 2020 up to and including January 9th, 2021.

NEW BUILDING TOWN HALL DASING: DECISION FOR THE WOODEN SLAT FACADE
In the parish council meeting of the parish of Dasing, the parish councils voted very clearly, with 16: 2 votes, in favor of the planned facade. The previous skepticism about the building material wood and the narrow slats as filters also in front of the windows has not least dispelled a visualization of the new town hall. On the contrary, the design was praised as being award-worthy and the possibility of cladding the existing building in this way was expressed as an idea.
"It's a healthy mix of new and old" from the point of view of a council member.

L’EMPREINTE D’UN HABITAT - CONSTRUIRE LÉGER ET DÉCARBONÉ AUSTELLUNGSERÖFFNUNG IM PAVILLON DE L’ARSENAL, PARIS
The exhibition, “The Footprint of a Dwelling”, analyzes thirty or so of these experimental constructions built between 1920 and 2020 that reflect the development of lightweight construction in industrialized countries. The pursuit of lightness isn’t a new one. The ambition of lowering the amount of material used in construction started one century ago in the context of a shortage of housing and materials. With the urgency to build more homes and the requirement to use fewer resources, a number of pioneers are inventing alternative architecture approaches. They are Richard Buckminster Fuller, Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Jeanneret, Albert Frey, Lawrence Kocher, Walter Gropius, Konrad Wachsmann, Jean Prouvé, Charles and Ray Eames, Makoto Masuzawa, Jorn Utzon…
The exhibition is presented chronologically around the 8 × 8 BCC house, designed by Jean Prouvé and Pierre Jeanneret, focussing on the comparative carbon footprint analysis of all experimental buildings. Being average in the comparison of carbon footprint per m2 of building envelope, the micro compact home is unique by its spatial organization which enables high usability, comfort and great flexibility within a minimum of space. By this the volume is reduced to a fraction in relation to a conventional internal layout and therefore lighter, using less material and allowing for an even smaller carbon footprint. Also outstanding is that the village of 7 micro compact homes is inhabited continuously since 2005. The experimental house has proven its suitability for everyday use.

NEW NEUFERT BAUENTWURFSLEHRE ‘ARCHITECTS DATA’ IN 43. EDITION
The project ‘micro compact home’ has been included into the new edition of the internationally renowned Architects' Data (German: Bauentwurfslehre), also simply known as the Neufert, a reference book for spatial requirements in building design and site planning. First published in 1936 by Ernst Neufert its 43 German editions and translations into 17 languages have sold over 500,000 copies.
Now three projects of our practice have become part of this compendium of exemplary design, the modular design for pumping stations (Allguth Tankstelle Unterföhring, page 254), the Glass Car Wash (Gläserne Waschstraße Germering, page 255) and now the ‘micro compact home’ on page 363.

POSITIVE RESPONSE BY DESIGN ADVICE COUNCIL
The design and building application for two additional housing blocks in timber hybrid construction was developed and handed in under extreme time pressure. In the subsequent presentation the design council received the proposals very positively, with one remark. The elegant feature of a floating light pergola should be even more generous. The city granted the additional building volume. We expect building permission soon.

SUSTAINABLE & FLEXIBLE
The New Apostolic Church in Munich Laim
Conservation of resources, energy efficiency, flexibility of use and simple modular building constructions determine the work of our office as self-evident components of integral planning and design.
The New Apostolic Church is CO2-neutral. The community center is heated or cooled with a PV system and groundwater heat pump and feeds annual energy surpluses into the public grid.
The flexible floor plan makes it possible to variably change the congregation rooms and to expand the sacred space from 200 to 500 seats. This makes it possible to continue to hold services for the congregation under the current spacing regulations.

PARAMETRIC MODEL
The design for the dome of the prayer hall is based on geomteric priciples of islamic art, with a 33 fold rotation of timber arches forming a central skylight. The structure of this oblate rotational sphere is constructed with beech plywood, due to its loadbearing capacity. On the basis of a digital 3d-concept model and in close collaboration with our team our partners Holzbau Amann and Design to Production developed a parametric model of the rotational ellipsoid sphere. Thus it was possible to define the segmentation of the filigrane structure consisting of 5-achs-milled plywood segments and optimise these for material efficient production and fast erection on site. A design process which is bridging traditional islamic art and modern digital timber engineering.

THE MODELL DECAYS,
THE BUILDING WILL LAST
The development of our projects is based on a step-by-step approach, research, analysis of refrences, intense co-operation with our clients and consultants, also sketches, 3d-studies and many models. These range from urban planning scale to mass models, concept and materiality models, to 1:1 mock-ups and details of building components. Especialy concept and materiality models are made of basic and simple materials, related to the desired object in surface, haptic or play of light.
In contrary to the development of the project, leading to more refined and enhanced quality in design and later the execution, the models often decay after their use due to their simple materiality. Eventually we can observe a beauty in decay as on this concept model of a mosk.
The fotographical documentation of this process of dissolution stands in contrast to the refinement of the project in the further design and realization process. There we take utmost care to ensure quality at all levels for our clients, professional, with joy and scrutiny. The model decays, the building will last.
